Understanding SLT

What Does a Speech & Language Therapist Do?

A speech and language therapist (SLT) supports children and young people who have difficulties with communication — whether that's understanding language, expressing themselves, using social communication skills, or producing clear speech sounds.

Communication underpins everything a child does — learning, friendships, expressing emotions, and navigating the world. When communication is difficult, children can become frustrated, isolated or disengaged. SLT provides the tools and strategies to help them connect and participate fully.

KidsKinetic speech and language therapists work in schools, homes and community settings — delivering sessions that are play-based, child-friendly and focused on real-world communication.

SLT supports children with:

Speech sound difficulties — unclear speech, pronunciation, articulation
Language difficulties — understanding instructions, expressing ideas, vocabulary
Social communication — turn-taking, understanding social rules, eye contact
Stammering & fluency — supporting confident, fluent communication
AAC — alternative and augmentative communication systems for non-verbal children
Language processing — understanding and retaining verbal information
Who We Support

Who Our Speech & Language Therapy Service is For

We support children and young people aged 0–25 across a wide range of communication needs - in school, at home and beyond.

Speech Sound Difficulties

Children who are difficult to understand due to unclear speech sounds, articulation difficulties or phonological delay - affecting confidence and classroom participation.

Autism & Social Communication

Children on the autism spectrum who find social communication, understanding social rules, or interpreting language in context particularly challenging.

Delayed Language Development

Children whose language skills are behind their peers - affecting their ability to follow instructions, express themselves or access the curriculum.

Stammering & Fluency

Children who stammer or have fluency difficulties - supporting confident communication and reducing the anxiety that often accompanies dysfluency.

AAC Users

Children who are non-verbal or minimally verbal, requiring Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) assessment, device support and training for families and staff.

EHCP & SEND Support

Children with an EHCP who require SLT assessment, statutory reporting, or ongoing speech and language input as part of their plan.
